The Toronto and East York Community Council finally made an honest park out of the greenspace surrounding East York Civic Centre on January 16 by voting to give it a formal name.

The proposed name, Memorial Gardens Park, had already appeared on Google Maps and “since these lands have been informally known as Memorial Gardens, the proposed park name would simply formalize this recognized name,” says a report from Sunil Sharma of the city’s Facilities Management department and Janie Romoff of Parks Forestry & Recreation, which share responsibility for maintaining the roughly two hectares of grounds.

“Public consultation is not required where the proposed property name is based on a location,” the report adds, noting that the suggested moniker “has geographical significance because it is based on the adjacent street name, Memorial Park Avenue.”

As long as no public objections arise, the TEYCC council has final say and voted unanimously to approve the staff recommendation.
