Juno-winning songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and mom Melanie Doane has lived in East York for several years and now teaches here too.

The daughter of famed Order of Canada recipient and educator Chalmers Doane adapted his acclaimed program, that introduces children to music through the ukulele, to start one called Uschool at her daughters’ Wilkinson Public School in 2009.

Since then Toronto District Board of Education has embraced it and now 650 students take 38 weekly classes across the city.  Students and instructors in the programs will gather for the now annual Uke Day mass concert at Wilkinson (which Mr. Doane appeared at last year) on Wed. June 14.
