There’s still a few days left for graduating students under 25 to apply for the second annual Young Leaders Scholarship granted by the local Danforth East Community Association.

Created last year in conjunction with the Scadding Court Community Centre, which has been endowing scholarships since 2001, the DECA grant is aimed at helping a deserving high school grad to pay for their post-secondary education.

The deadline to apply for this year’s bursary is Friday, March 24.

“Through this scholarship we want to recognize, encourage and support young leaders in our community,” according to Elizabeth Dove, spokesperson for the DECA Connects working group that aims to increase the neighbourhood’s sense of community by addressing local social issues.

To be eligible students must be 25 or younger; live or go to high school inside the DECA area of Monarch Park to Main St., Lumsden/Mortimer to the train tracks; be graduating this year and have a plan to continue education; identify a financial need; and have a strong record of activism or engagement, according to a press release from organization.

Last year’s winner, former Danforth Collegiate student Chantelle Johnson, used the funds to start her studies at Humber College in Fashion Business Management.

Full details on the scholarship, how to apply and a link to the application can be found on the Scadding Court website or contact Rebecca Keenan via email or by phone at 416-392-0335.
