A seniors’ support care worker with an East York company that helps seniors to continue living at home has won recognition as top Canadian employee of the firm.

Verna Edwards, who provides a variety of in-home services for seniors through the local East York-based franchise Home Instead Senior Care, was chosen as “CAREgiver of the Year” for Canada last month, the company recently announced.

The nine-year veteran of the local firm, located on Woodbine Ave., now becomes one of seven regional finalists for the “Mary Steibel CAREGiver of the Year” award, the network’s top caregiving honour, which will be presented at its annual international convention in Omaha, Nebraska from April 26-28, a company press release adds.

The company’s owner, Colin Macdonald, said he was proud to see Edwards recognized for her “compassionate service and commitment to older adults,” to whom to company’s workers provide services such as companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, incidental transportation, errands and shopping, to help them remain independent at home. Cuffy's 028

She was apparently taken by surprise by the award. “When they told me, I just couldn’t believe it. I still can’t believe it. I kept telling them that they are just pulling my leg,” she reportedly said.

“It’s just amazing. I never do this job for the recognition, I do it because these people need us, and I want to help. I hope to continue doing this job for as long as I can,” she added.
