2017 King of the Grill Frank Brezovsky -COURTESY

East York resident and dad Frank Brezovsky has been selected from numerous entries to be this year’s “King of the Grill” by organizers of the eighth annual Thrill of the Grill exhibition and contest that takes place Saturday, June 17 on Danforth Ave. between Playter Crescent and Broadview.

It’s the first year that the contest has been included as part of the event, which sees five area restaurants plus a local butcher and fishmonger prepare their best grill creations as part of a charity fundraising effort.  Susan Puff, executive director of the Danforth Business Improvement Area organization that puts it together, says that “we are celebrating dads and father figures” with this year’s edition and an associated sidewalk sale.

Mr. Brezovsky and his family, who live near Pape and Danforth, will be “royally hosted” at the noon-4 p.m. event, adds DBIA spokesman Steve Williams.  They’ll be chauffeur-driven to the site on the boulevard, which is closed to traffic, in a limo provided by Rosedale Livery as well as receiving VIP event tickets, a new Kamado Joe BBQ, a VIP Tour & Tasting Package for 10 people at Steamwhistle Brewery and ‘royal prize packs’ from Second Cup and Cobbs Bakery.

Mr. Brezovsky, whose entry beat those of dads and father figures from across the GTA and as far away as Ottawa submitted via the DBIA website, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, was nominated by his son, Sammy “because of all that he does for us and because he is an all-year-round amazing griller” according to his wife, Laura Bullard.

The contest is hosted by TV celebrity chef Lynn Crawford (“Chopped Canada”) and style guru Tommy Smythe (HGTV’s “Home To Win” and “House and Home”) and features beef, chicken, fish, ribs and veggies.  Participating grillers are: Allen’s, The Combine Eatery,Factory Girl, Globe Bistro, The Edmund Burke, seafood market De La Mer and butcher The Meat Department.

Celebrity judges for the grill contest include Jason Burnett (Olympic silver medalist in trampoline); Geoff Rohoman (morning show reporter at 680 News); Karon Liu (food writer at the Toronto Star); Norm Wilner (Now Magazine film critic); Lora Kirk (executive chef of Ruby WatchCo); Taylor Corrigan (brand ambassador for Jack Daniel’s); Adrianne O’Halloran (executive director of advancement at the Sunnybrook Foundation); Dr. Georg Bjarnason (of Odette Cancer Centre).

The judges will also select a best drink recipe in a cocktail competition including whiskey sour recipes, while participants of legal drinking age will vote on the people’s choice.  Sunwing vacations will also be offering a trip for two to Mexico during the event.

Tickets for the whole affair are $20 which includes seven grilled samplers, flavoured mini-corn and a beverage (or $10 for a meatless option) and proceeds go to kidney cancer research at Sunnybrook’s Odette Cancer Centre, which has received over $120,000 from the event since 2012.
