The Dragons Abreast Toronto team of dragon boat paddlers we told you about last month achieved their Canada Day 20th anniversary celebration goal of reaching Parliament Hill on Canada Day after a six-day paddle along 100 km of the Rideau Canal.

In the process, the breast cancer survivors group, started by east TO resident Eleanor Nielsen, wanted to raise $10,000 for Gilda’s Club of Greater Toronto, a charity that assists women battling cancer. At press time the group had way exceeded that, raising over $18,000 for Gilda’s.

Their hope was to be on Parliament Hill during the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Canada’s founding but that was thwarted by heavy security around the Hill.

“We got to the base of Parliament Hill but security was so tight we couldn’t wait to go through the lines to get on the Hill,” group spokesperson Mary Mather told East York Chronicle.

However, she added, “We do have a lovely letter from the Prime Minister congratulating us.” As well he should!
