Famed East York political and social activist Agnes Macphail, who was the first female MP elected to the federal Parliament after women first got the vote in 1921, is being honoured on a special limited edition $10 bank note being produced to commemorate the nation’s 150th birthday.

The announcement was made on May 23 at a special unveiling at Leaside High School by Don Valley West MP Rob Oliphant, accompanied by Ginette Petitpas (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance) and Bank of Canada staff.

Ms. Macphail lived in Leaside and also represented the area in the Ontario Legislature during a long career as an advocate for equal rights, equal pay and social justice.
