I recently treated myself to a pedicure at the newest location of The Ten Spot at 979 Coxwell Avenue in Olde East York Village and was very impressed —not only with how great my feet looked and felt afterward, but also with the customer service, atmosphere and cleanliness of the salon.

While I soaked my feet in the warm, sudsy water from the comfort of my chair, I was kindly offered a delicious, frothy coffee.

There was a large selection of nail polish colors to choose from, in high quality brands such as OPI and Essie including the new Essie Couture line, which guest coordinator Justice Sutton says “just comes off like you would take off normal polish.  It’s like gel without the difficulties of taking it off.”

Ashley Turner, esthetic and waxing expert, says another benefit of Essie Couture polish is that “it’s going to stay and hold like a gel” but is no more harmful to nails than regular polish —which is not always the case with gel.

The Coxwell location, although open for only a few months, already has a steady, regular clientele, many of whom have come to feel like friends, Ashley and Justice told me.  Customers appreciate the bright and modern, yet warm ambiance, which Ashley says they “try to make very homey so you can come and chill and talk about anything.”

On-site manager Remmy Funtos is “into creating an experience,” she says.

“It’s not only about getting your nails done. It’s about making you feel like the best version of yourself.”

Besides manicures and pedicures, The Ten Spot also offers many other spa and skin care services, such as facials and waxing in a discreet, spotless private room at the back, complete with flat screen TV to take your mind off the pain of waxing!

Justice notes that the company does skin analysis as well.  “Our facial experts can look at your skin and recommend the best treatment” for you, she says.

“Our interactions with customers are very personal,” she notes.  When a new customer comes in for the first time, the guest coordinator on duty will start a file for the customer, noting individual color preferences, skin sensitivities or allergies.  The Ten Spot also keeps a record of their customers’ birthdays so if someone comes in any time during the week of their birthday they are given a SWAG bag containing a facial sample, information packet, complimentary lip gloss or nail file or a Ten Spot brand lotion or scrub.

I was glad to learn I could use any service in the salon and not have to worry about hygiene.  Ashley assured me that The Ten Spot “has very high standards in cleaning” so “we’re meeting every necessary aspect of sanitation.” Don’t worry about putting your feet in someone else’s leftover dead skin, as the tubs are sterilized after every use.  All stainless steel equipment used for nail treatments is placed in 70% alcohol to sterilize it before the next use.  Also, Justice noted, “we never reuse wax strips.”

The salon is popular not only with mom and daughter duos but also for mothers and sons as well as husbands and wives.  “We definitely also cater to men,” says Ashley, which she says she enjoys.

Grooming for men, especially manicures and pedicures is “an up and coming thing,” as is waxing—the only caveat being that they don’t do “Manzilian” waxing.

The Ten Spot 036Products are available for sale, including Dermalogica, which is said to be one of the best skin care lines in the world, as well as the local skin care brand Miracle Ten, which is a little easier on the wallet.

But no matter your budget, prices for services as well as products sold at The Ten Spot are not out of reach.  “The everyday woman can afford a good skin care regime,” at Ten Spot, Ashley says, adding that “we realize that not everyone has a massive budget.”

The next time you need a little pampering, for great service in a cheerful, relaxing atmosphere, give The Ten Spot on Coxwell a try and see what makes it a perfect ten!
