Although it’s possibly better known these days in the East York area as an entertainment room with a mix of eclectic genres featured several nights a month, cozy but elegant Hirut at 2050 Danforth Avenue a bit west of Woodbine should not be overlooked for its culinary attractions. Ethiopian-born namesake and chef Hirut was under the weather for a while earlier this year and the kitchen was actually closed for a couple of months so the entertainment was a life-saver. The roster includes monthly first-Thursday Jazz, last-Friday comedy, first-Friday Roots in-the-round and Pop and Jazz nights peppered throughout the month. The room’s anchor event is the delightful weekly Sunday 3-6 eclectic open stage with Nicola Vaughan, which has been running for six years now.
