That was the highest recorded speed of the winds being generated by Hurricane Irma back in September as it pounded the Caribbean and southeastern United States.  Irma would go on to become one of the most damaging weather events in the history of the chain of islands dotting the Caribbean Sea.  As if it were a cruel joke, some of those islands that thought they had survived Irma were hit by a near equally devastating hurricane named Maria just weeks later while the British Virgin Islands received a double dose of grief as they were hit by both hurricanes. Apparently, Mother Nature does not believe in fairness. EY tree lightings get the magic of the season underway

Community gatherings to light Christmas trees in public areas always help to make it feel like it’s officially holiday season. On Nov. 30 a good-sized crowd joined Councillors Mary Fragedakis and Janet Davis of Wards 29 and 31 respectively to celebrate lighting the giant conifer at East York Civic Centre [in pic at left].
