EY filmmaker explores 1971 Pakistani massacre

East York filmmaker Fuad Chowdhury, whose documentary “Change Your Name Ousama” we wrote about in last year in Issue 027 [see “EY filmmaker offering ‘Islamophobia’ doc to help spark dialogue”] is about to release a new work on another politically charged subject with a showing of “Merciless Mayhem -The Bangladeshi Genocide through Pakistani Eyes” on January 27 at 7 p.m.

Based on the events of 1971, when Pakistan was riven by racial, religious and territorial rivalries, the film includes interviews with journalists and former Pakistani military officers who were present during atrocities against the Bengali minority that are said to have killed millions.

It is the story, Mr. Chowdhury says in a press release, “of the blood-soaked birth of Bangladesh.”
The film, which will be shown at the Mizan Complex at 3000 Danforth Ave., is in English with some subtitled interviews in Urdu. It will have its U.S. premiere in New York in February.
